  3. How to Install Addons

Addons allow individual users to customize and expand the features or the appearance of the Firefall interface. There are a myriad of different addons that provide functions from tracking your resource scans to adding random hats to the mobs in the game. This guide will covers how to install addons manually or with the addon manager Melder. Finally the CurseForge client will be briefly covered.

There are two types of addons, a regular addon and mods. They both can add functions to the game, but the key characteristic of a mod is that it modifies, replaces, or removes an element of the stock interface that comes with the game. If you were to remove the activity tracker on the right side of the screen, you would be using a mod. The extra flexibility that a mod provides has downsides: mods conflict with other mods that modify the same part of the game. If two mods both modify the skill bar at the bottom of the screen, for example, they cannot be installed concurrently. Addons are more limited, only being able to add new elements to the game, and should not conflict with each other.

To install addons, first you must download them. Addons and mods can be found in our addons section or on the Firefall forums. Find a few that seem useful to you, and then continue on.

There are two ways to install addons, manually or with Melder. The manual method will be covered first. After you find an addon you want to install, save it to your computer. You will then need ot find the folder Firefall is installed to. For most people, if you didn't change the install directory of Firefall, this will be in "C:\Program Files\Red 5 Studios\Firefall" on 32-bit operating systems or "C:\Program Files (x86)\Red 5 Studios\Firefall" for 64-bit operating systems. After finding this folder, browse to "system\gui\components\MainUI" and create the "Addons" folder if it does not already exist. Simply extract the contents of the addon archive you downloaded into this folder, except the melder_info.ini file if it exists. Now just hop into game and you can use your addon. Some addons can be installed or removed without restarting the game. In this case, simply type "/rui" without the quotes into chat to reload the UI and refresh your addons.

It is not recommended to install mods manually. Mods change the base UI of the game and may have conflicts that Melder can resolve for you. Many mod authors no longer post manual install instruction on their threads. If your mod author has instructions for manual installation, simply follow the directions outlined in the forum thread for the mod to install it.

If your user interface no longer works after installing addons, you can revert your interface back to the default by deleting the Addons folder and running the Firefall launcher. In the top right corner of the launcher is a gear icon, located next to the minimize and close buttons. Press the gear and select "Check/Repair Installation" to revert your UI back to its default state.

Melder is an application that automatically updates addons and resolves conflicts between them. It also provides an easy way to install and uninstall addons. To user Melder, download the application and place it into a folder. Run Melder, and it will run.

First, you will want to set up a folder to store all your addons. In your Melder folder, create a folder called "addons" and tell Melder to put all your addons in this folder by clicking Tools -> Settings. Click the browse button and find your addons folder. Now, when you download addons, if they are Melder supported simply place them into this new addons folder. If the addon does not support Melder, you will have to install it using the manual method.

To install an addon, find it in the addons list and simply click the checkbox to the left of it. To uninstall an addon uncheck the same box. It is that simple. The newest version of Melder also provides a way to perform a one-click install whenever you see the following button in a forum thread.

To use this functionality, first enable it in the settings menu by checking "Enable One-Click Forum Downloads." Then, all you need to do is click on that button in the thread where the addon you want is located, and Melder will prompt whether or not you want to download it. Voila, there is your addon, which is stored in your new addons folder. Following that, simply install it as usual.

If you have played World of Warcraft or other addon-supported games, you have probably used the Curse client. If you have a Curse account and want to use their client, the install method for addons works the same, except your selection is limited to any addon that has been uploaded to the CurseForge, which can be browsed in the Firefall section of the client. To detect Firefall for the first time, you go through the same steps as any other game on Curse, by going to Tools -> Scan for All Games. If your game is still not detected properly, you can add it manually using the Tools -> Add a Game function.

Installing addons works the same way as any other Curse game. Select Firefall and click on Addons. At this point you can browse and install any addon that has been uploaded to the Curse Forge. Note that not all addon authors have elected to support the Curse install method, so similarly to Melder, you may have to fall back on the manual install method for an addon.

Now you might be asking what addons will enhance your gameplay the most. We have compiled a list of addons in our addons database and have some general recommendations on which addons are highly recommended for every user. You can find those here.
